Ride Summary / Distance / Ride Difficulty:

Carter Lake and then Pinewood Lake. Ride will be approx 50-60 miles. Ride will be Moderately Difficult.

Ride Description / Route:

The ride to Carter is flat and will warm us up.  The climb up to Carter is only a mile or so, but a lot of fun.  We ride along the lake, drop down and then the real climb begins up to Pinewood: 4 miles at probably 8-10%--our own version of Brasstown, or Angileru, or Zoncolan.  It is definitely not for a 39/23!  Out and back should be about 50-60 miles, and the great part is we don’t have to climb up to Carter on the ride back (unless we are gluttons for punishment).

We will have regrouping points along the way (noted on the map).  I will shepherd the ride, so less comfortable riders need not worry about being lost along the way.  I will be glad to help with climbing tips and tricks as we go, along with descending advice.  The roads are not heavily traveled, but Larimer County is cracking down on riding two or more abreast—this will be a wonderful opportunity to work on pace lining and drafting.  Note:  The descents from Carter Lake and Pinewood (grades will exceed 12% in sections) are steep, fast, and technical—riders must be sure their brakes work, period.  Riders must know and descend within their limits.  I will talk through the descents before leaving Longmont.

The map is on www.runningmap.com, map id 51504.  Please print off a copy.
