Happy July Team!

1) O, the Rocket’s Red Glare of our Team Fundraising Thermometer!   Sizzling!  That’s the only way to describe a cycling team that raises over $19,000 in one week.  Thanks for heeding the call gang! Many of you have dusted off the email tools and gotten going with you fundraising appeals and the result is a spectacular $97,834 so far – so we’ve achieved 40% of our goal with just 24 days left till the Courage Classic.  On behalf of the docs & kids at Children’s -- THANK YOU!

But did you know that there are still 60 members of our team still have a $0 in their fundraising total column?   Let’s get ready to rumble folks and feel the sheer joy of all 175 Wheels of Justice riders pulling together as one this week.  The July 4th  holiday weekend is a perfect time to send out your emails – your recipients are much more likely to respond and donate when they have a little extra time on their hands, too. If you need any help getting going, please give me a call or shoot me an email.

2) Bradley Scott’s Fundraising Tip:  Use Every Email Address You Have:   Bradley and his wife Stephania are riding for the Wheels of Justice for the 2nd year in a row -- Bradley ended up raising $5690 for the kids and docs at Children’s last year.  I asked him to share the secrets of his success with us, and it’s a very familiar refrain, folks – if you want to succeed, ASK EVERYONE!  Here’s Bradley’s advice:

“Asking every person I have an e-mail address for to "Support my ride" is my secret for fund raising success. My e-mails end up in nearly 50% of the states of this great country and the great people respond with support. Many out of state supporters have ties to Children’s either through immediate family or friends and they all want to support this great hospital for what they did for those they love. Do not think "will they give?" Before sending your e-mail.....just send it!”

So remember, the recipients of your emails will REALLY not be offended that you are asking them for $$ – instead, they’ll think it’s really cool that your busting your butt riding up mountains and raising money for kids!  But you gotta ask!

3) TRAINING RIDES ARE A HIT in 2009 – Many thanks to all of the kind WoJ riders who have hosted training rides and those who have turned out to make them really fun this year.  Special thanks to Bicycle Village for hosting the great ride from their Littleton store on Saturday and to the hearty souls who turned out for the Mt. Evans adventure on Sunday.  Check out our team facebook page to see great pics from several training rides this year.

4) ONCE AGAIN -- TWO, Count em, TWO TRAINING RIDES THIS WEEKEND!

a) Saturday, July 4, 2009, 8:00am – Georgetown – Loveland Pass w/ Keystone Option

Ride host: Heather Purcell

Start: 603 Brownell St., Georgetown, CO  Rolling out at  8:00am SHARP!

Directions: Take the Georgetown exit  (#228) off I-70 West; left under the underpass, then Coming into Georgetown , you take a right turn at the 4 way stop (Argentine St.) and stay on this street. This road becomes Brownell near the end. Don't take the uphill fork to the right, this goes to the train. The house is on the right, next to the last where the street ends at 6th.

Ride Description: We will start from central Georgetown (great little Victorian mining town, if you ever venture beyond the gas station!) @ 8,512 ft.  We’ll ride on the bike path for a while, then the I-70 shoulder (unavoidable) and then up to the top of gorgeous Loveland Pass (11,990 ft).

From here you can: 1) Return to Georgetown (32 miles total r/t) or 2) ride to Keystone and then back to Georgetown via Loveland Pass again (57 miles r/t).  See map at http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/co/georgetown/783512029.  I will likely be doing option #1 because I want to be back in Georgetown for the 4th of July Parade which starts at 11:00am (and will pass by the house!).  You are welcome to join us on the porch.  Soon after, we’ll have a BBQ at the house, so please bring whatever you would like to grill!  Georgetown also has great fireworks, later in the evening.

Please RSVP to hpurcell@designonscreen.org or 303-641-5986 by 10am Friday, July 3.  Also you can call/email early on Saturday if you have questions about cancellations.

b) Sunday, July 5, 7:00 a.m. Evergreen to Echo Lake w/ Mt. Evans Option

Starting Time:    The ride will start at 7:00 a.m. sharp Sunday. Please arrive early so that you are ready to ride at our start time.

Training Ride Host:  James "Rufus" Garts. Please RSVP by Noon Saturday, July 4 to James Garts at Garts@pelegrinradeff.com or by mobile phone 719-930-5190.

Meeting Place:   Take U.S.-6 W/6th Avenue west to I-70 toward Grand Junction (9.3 mi). Merge onto Evergreen Parkway/CO-74 E via Exit 252 toward CO-74(3.5 mi). Turn left onto Ellingwood Trail. We’ll meet by the baseball fields. I’ve never had a problem with parking but if you anyone would like to carpool I have room for 2 more bicycles and two more people in a pinch. I drive a blue Volkswagen.

Description:   We will cross Evergreen Parkway and ride up Squaw Pass about 17 miles to Echo Lake. The ride doesn’t have the steepest of grades but gains about 3000 feet of elevation. We will stop to rest and gather the troops at Echo Lake. Some may choose to return to their vehicles in Evergreen but anyone willing may choose to continue to the summit of Mt. Evans, which amounts to about another 3000 feet of elevation gain. Bring a windbreaker, sunscreen, snacks and plenty of water [ed note: last week it was really cold, so please bring gloves and extra layers!]. FYI, the temperature difference between the bottom and the top can easily be as much as 40 degrees. I’m planning to do the full round trip and hope to see you there. For more information and photos see www.coloradobicyclerides.com and link to Squaw Pass and Mt. Evans.

Check the WoJ Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=58302100863&ref=nf for weather cancellation news.

5) Join the Wheels of Justice on Facebook:  Yes, the WOJ Facebook group is growing - now 92 members.  Check out the WoJ page: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58302100863
This is a great place to post and read communications, share pictures, discuss cycling stuff  with other WOJ team members.  Updates are sent out for all WOJ events, so you won't miss a training ride or any other happening. If you are not on Facebook yet, and need help signing up, shoot an email to Les.Morgan@Gmail.com and she will help you get there.

6) Many thanks to our incredible 2009 Wheels of Justice team sponsors – we really couldn’t do this without their generous support!

Questions or concerns?  Please let me know.  Thanks for your terrific help so far  and see you on a training ride soon!

Best,

Heather
