Welcome to the Home Stretch Team!
1) TWO WEEKS! That’s all we have left before we roll out for those epic mountain passes and count up all of our fundraising for all the kids and doctors at Children’s Hospital. We’ve crossed that golden $100K threshold (yea!) and now stand at $109,087 (way to go!). But just like Lance, there’s no time to look back, only forward to our goal. Right now we are the #1 team, in terms of riders (174), and we are a very close second, in terms of fundraising, to our good-natured competitors the Research Riders (they are only $7K ahead of us for the first time ever). Could it be that this is the year that we move ahead of those intrepid commercial real estate brokers who have worn the green $$$ jersey for the last 3 years? Dare we dream of it? YES WE CAN!
But did you know that there are still 60 members of our team still have a $0 in their fundraising total column? Gang, it is time wake up and smell the chain lube! We have a great chance to make a big difference for the Children’s Cancer Center but we need each Wheels of Justice team member to start pulling now! If you need help getting going, please email me now!
2) Amazing Tales of WoJ: Rider Steven Adams’ Inspirational Story:
“With the great experiences of riding with the Wheels of Justice come great stories. Mine is no different I guess. After losing our daughter to cancer my wife Joan and I started the Morgan Adams Foundation to raise money for childhood cancer research. Three years ago we where put in contact with Heather Purcell hoping her team would dedicate the WOJ fundraising proceeds from the Courage Classic to the oncology department at The Children’s Hospital. In so doing, Joan committed me to joining WOJ cycling team to support the group in the 2007 Courage Classic ride. I’m not sure when I had ridden a bike last but it was a while ago and my old mountain bike was all I had. I remember the first training ride from Evergreen to Idaho Springs up Squaw Mountain. As I was being passed by everyone going up the hills each rider would chuckle commenting on my bravery or stupidity riding a mountain bike on the road on such steep and long climbs. Well I wasn’t brave and proving I wasn’t stupid I quickly bought a road bike to ride the ’07 Courage Classic. Wow! what a difference a bike makes.
Well two years later I am an avid road cyclist. So much so I have multiple magazines coming to the house and the office. Watch all the Grand Tours on TV and even entered a contest in Bicycling magazine with a 50 word essay on why I should win an Eddy Merckx experience which included a new ’09 EM3 Merckx bike and a trip to Italy to race in the Grand Fondo Eddy Merckx race in Verona. To everyone’s amazement I won that contest and with my new Morgan Adams Foundation jersey went to Italy and raced in this great cycling event. Many things have changed in the last two years; I’ve gotten a lot faster, and stronger. But more importantly the WOJ team has gotten bigger, and stronger and has raised more money than just about any other team for Childhood cancer research. So thank you to all my friends on WOJ for calling me brave or stupid, don’t tell me which, and pushing me to be better at this great sport and thank each of you for your continued efforts in making a difference in a child’s life who is battling cancer. I Look forward to seeing you at this years Courage Classic!
My Essay for Bicycling Magazine: My 6 year old daughter died from cancer and I ride fundraising in her memory. Eddy's exceptional riding is an inspiration and reminds me in the toughest times you can push through, endure the worst and help others to have a chance to live their dreams -- even kids with cancer."
