*****PLEASE NOTE THERE IS IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT THE COURAGE CLASSIC AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS NEWSLETTER. PLEASE PRINT OUT AND BRING WITH YOU. THE INFO WILL BE REPEATED NEXT WEEK TOO ******
Greetings from Telluride!
Wow, I just finished a beautiful ride up/down Lizard Head Pass (10, 2000 ft) here so incredibly beautiful. Since I converted to cycling from running in 2005 (thanks mainly to the Courage Classic), I continue to be amazed by all of the stunning rides that our wonderful state has to offer! No matter how many new ones I try, there are always more to discover, it seems. How lucky we are to live in Colorado, eh?
1) It’s a Fundraising Horserace This Year! Wowee, zowee! Did you ever respond to my suggestion last week! Our fundraising total now stands at: $123,436 and only $1030 separates us from our good-natured competitors the Research Riders! Could it be that 2009 is the year when the Wheels of Justice becomes the #1 team in both riders and fundraising? Since so many of us are lawyers and thrive on competition, let’s channel that incredible desire and energy into a BIG WIN for Children’s Hospital! I think it could really happen gang, but it will take an extra effort from all of us to slip into the Courage Classic’s #1 spot. I aint too proud to beg, here gang. Please, please, please take a moment now to send a round of emails to your contacts let them know how exceited you are to ride for Children’s, how much you’ve trained and how much the docs and kids at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders need us!
2) TRUE TALES OF THE Wheels of Justice, #257: This week, we’ll hear from Robert Leja, a first-time WoJ rider from Ft Collins. His story is a great one and tells us again, SEND THOSE EMAILS TO EVERYONE EVEN IF YOU HAVENT TALKED TO THEM IN 25 YEARS!: “Last weekend, i came to the harsh realization that the Courage Classic was 2 weeks out, and though i was on track as far as training, i'd raised exactly $25 towards my goal of $500 (I'd actually posted a goal of $1000, since i'm an optimist and thought a smaller goal might lull people into making smaller donations, but i'd only committed to the $500 level for the WOJ jersey). So i cut and pasted Heather's email wording that came a few newsletters ago, and made a few modifications to make it sound like me. Then I loaded about 100 email contacts (friends, family, co-workers and clients, even facebook friends and casual acquaintances) into the email software on the Couragetours.com fundraising page, and blasted it out on Monday morning. By Wednesday noon, i'm now at $540 on the books, with commitments from a handful of others who would prefer to give me cash or a check. I've been amazed at the folks who've responded. One friend that i'd lost touch with gave $200--her daughter's newborn had to go to Children's to be diagnosed, after her local hospital gave incorrect information and put her through lots of unnecessary tests. When i emailed to thank her, she thanked ME and told me she'd check back next week, because she wanted to make sure i'd reach my goal! I got another donation from a former co-worker in Boston from many years ago, who found me on facebook last week, and who i literally haven't talked to in 25 years (and still haven't aside from her posting a couple of facebook comments...). It's amazing how it all works, and how easy it is. And it just goes to show that it never hurts to ask...even if you don't think there's a chance they'll donate. You might be as surprised as I was!

*****IMPORTANT COURAGE CLASSIC INFO: PLEASE READ AND BRING WITH YOU TO COPPER!
A) Safety & Sportsmanship at the Courage Classic -- The Courage Classic is an amazing, fun and inspirational event! BUT IT'S NOT A RACE! Last year we had ZERO WOJ INJURIES! (unlike 2007 when we had 3 riders go down). We all know that this can happen to any of us at any time when we ride this type of terrain and conditions -- but we'll help our odds by taking it easy, always signaling or announcing intentions to turn, slow or stop and being super-aware of all those around us. Remember, our goal this year again is ZERO WoJ injuries. Let's all do our part.
Also please remember to be extra courteous and supportive of your fellow riders on the Tour -- we are all part of the Courage Classic's largest team, we have the coolest swag, and we're known as "the Lawyers' Team" (even though we have soooo many wonderful non-lawyers), so people are pretty much pre-disposed to think we're a bunch of jerks. But, as we've done the last three years, let's surprise 'em by showing ‘em that we are actually the friendliest team -- Announce yourself before you pass by saying "on your left", give all others a wide berth, offer to stop and help those with flats or other problems and approach the whole thing with a BIG smile and a hug, if you can. Remember, you'll be wearing the Wheels of Justice colors, so in effect you are an ambassador for the Denver legal and business community. Last year, it was wonderful to hear so many great comments about how positively our team was perceived -- let's keep the love going in our 4TH year!
B) Please come to the Wheels of Justice Party at the Courage Classic: Sunday, July 26 from 2-6pm [NEW LOCATION !!]: Our party will take place at THE STORM KING RESTAURANT (just around the corner from INCLINE restaurant and just off Burning Stones Plaza -- also just across the cobblestone sidewalk from where we’ve had the party the last 3 years) We'll have burgers, dogs, beer, tea and lemonade for all WoJ riders and their families. We’ll take our team picture near our party at 4pm SHARP (WEAR your 2009 WoJ LONG-SLEEVED TRAINING SHIRTS or JERSEYS!!, else you will be tucked in the very back row) Just after the team pic, we'll be thanking our sponsors and all of the folks who have worked so hard to make this year a success.
C) TEAM PIC & TRIAING JERSEYS: BE SURE TO BRING YOUR LONG-SLEEVED TRAINING SHIRTS TO THE COURAGE CLASSIC, AS WE'LL ALL BE WEARING THIS FOR OUR TEAM PIC TO BE TAKEN SUNDAY AT 4PM. Please wear these shirts when walking around at Copper, as we'll be able to identify each other and it’s great PR for the team..
D) Team Start/Pic: If you are up for it, please be ready at the start at Leadville and ready to go at 7:45am ON SATURDAY. We'll gather briefly under the START Banner to take a WoJ Team picture with those epic mountains in the background.
E) NON-RIDER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SUNDAY FOR TEAM PARTY: IS YOUR SPOUSE OR FRIEND INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING FOR THE TEAM AT THE COURAGE CLASSIC?: We especially need volunteers at the Team Party on Sunday, starting with set-up at 1pm and with ONE-HOUR shifts continuing till 6pm. If you know of volunteers, please ask them to contact me via email.
Questions or concerns? Please let me know. Thanks for your terrific help so far and see you on a training ride soon!
Best,
Heather
